The changing workplace The importance of peer-to-peer appreciation

The changing workplace The importance of peer-to-peer appreciationThe changing workplace The importance of peer-to-peer appreciationWhen we first started applying the 5 languages to work-based relationships, out initial focus of communicating appreciation within the workplace was on managers and supervisors. In the past, an employees relationship with their direct supervisor was found to be one of the fruchtwein influential factors on whether or not the employee enjoyed their job. So, our early focus was on training supervisors and managers in how to communicate appreciation effectively to their team members. While this was a good starting point, we quickly learned that to focussolelyon managers and supervisors was to narrow and was not all that was needed. Although most employees like to receive positive messages from their supervisor, hearing encouragement and support from their coworkers has become increasingly important. Receiving a compliment or having a colleague report to other s how valuable your contribution was to the success of a project is extremely meaningful to mora and mora employees. Moreover, colleagues are the individuals who often seem to be most excited to learn how to support their peers. Team members repeatedly tell us that they want to learn how to encourage and support their colleagues. In fact, we are finding that the work groups that are most successful in creating a positive work environment are the ones where the manager understands and works to implement the principle of mutual appreciation and encouragement among team members. How the Workplace Has ChangedThe biggest change to the workplace in the last decade has been the influx of millions of younger employees and the exodus of older generations. This shift has had a dynamic effect on the look, feel, and structure of workplace culture. Younger employees, as a group, tend to desire more collaboration in completing tasks. And as the proportion of employees and leaders from younger gener ations increases, the supervisor-employee relationship has declined in importance. In past decades, it was common to hear people say things like, people dont leave a job, they leave a supervisor. However, recent employee engagement surveys have found that employee happiness is more closely correlated to the connections they share with their coworkers rather than those they shared with their direct supervisor.BenefitsThe new edition ofThe 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplacegoes into more depth on both the benefits of peer to peer appreciation, the implications for action, and feedback from training participants. But our recent experiences make it clear that expanding the focus from expecting managers and supervisors to the sole appreciators to include peer appreciation creates numerous positive results for teams.Lightens the load (and perceived load) on managers and supervisors to provide all of the relational support within a team.Supports the focus of younger employees on p eer relationships in the workplace.Allows for appreciation to be applied and communicated even if a manager/ supervisor isnt interested or involved.Keeps team members engaged and empowers them to make a difference in their work culture.Just to clarify, were not proposing that managers give up their efforts to show recognition and communicate appreciation to team members. But when employeesandsupervisors consistently and effectively communicate appreciation to their colleagues, positive results occur more quickly and are more dramatic in their intensity, and the staying power of their effect is longer lasting.A key action step is to have all team members take theMotivating By Appreciation Inventoryand then fill out an master of business administration Inventory Group Profile for your team. The result? Positive communication and improved morale to a level we never imaginedThisarticlefirst appeared onAppreciation At Work.

My New Job Meant Waking Up Early (at 4 AM) - The Muse

My New Job Meant Waking Up Early (at 4 AM) - The MuseMy New Job Meant Waking Up Early (at 4 AM) There are very few things I value more than sleep. So when I got an opportunity to work on an entertainment news television show, I was jazzed- until I learned what the hours were. The new job would require waking up early- as in 4 AM- so I could be at work by 5 AM, with my workday finishing up by 130 PM. Sure, Id still be working about eight hours a day, just quite a bit earlier than your standard 9 to 5. Accepting this role meant accepting my entire life was about to change. notlage only would I be starting a new job- a unique challenge in and of itself- but Id also be moving across the country to do it. Id be acclimating to a new position with a new company in a different city with a different time zone and a bonkers new work schedule. And Id have to make this adjustment all at once and preferably without exploding all over the open-office floor plan. To top it all off, the early-bird s hift meant reining in my side hustle as a freelance writer and stand-up comedian, at least while I was getting settled. As a general rule, most comedy-related events start late and end really late. I knew taking the TV gig meant Id have to trim my performance schedule, but I was hopeful (or delusional) and believed I could manage both. A month in, Ive learned a few things about how to make a transition like this without sacrificing your sleep, social life, or stability. Everything Was GreatI hopped off the tuch at LAX with a dream and a months worth of its-chilly-before-sunrise cardigans. (The rest of my stuff would arrive during the official move later on.) I had to start work at 5 AM the next day, so I went to bed early. For once, jet lag was on my side. My body was so confused by the changes in time, location, and climate that it gave up and I fell asleep without a problem. I was able to enforce my 9 PM bedtime almost every night and had no issues waking up at 4 AM each morning. I tried to exercise daily, usually right after work, assuming itd help regulate my sleep schedule. I began showering at night, which felt weird, but it was the only way to ensure I didnt give up on hygiene altogether. Things were going so well that I started to suspect I was invincible or- maybe, possibly- a morning person.I was feeling great about all my life choices until Saturday, when my car got entangled in a three-car pileup on the freeway caused by a hit-and-run driver. This turned out to be an accurate foreshadowing of the week to come.Everything Was TerribleThe move, the job, the schedule- it all caught up to me. Whatever enthusiasm and adrenaline had been propelling me through the previous week was gone and I felt exhausted all the time. I experimented with naps, but was spending most of my free time on the phone arguing with the rental car company over the accident, which had the opposite of a sedating effect. Since I was struggling to control my sleep and stress levels, I worked instead to regulate my eating. But I couldnt quite nail down the best times to eat to maximize my energy. The only thing I knew for sure was that my company gives us free bagels on Thursdays, so I was relieved to have one meal figured out. Ilana Gordon performing in Los Angeles courtesy of Ilana Gordon.Eager to establish myself in my new city, I pushed myself to go out and perform almost every night and found myself crashing into bed between 10 PM and midnight. But that was a mistake. I limped toward the weekend and spent my time off catching up on sleep and planning how Id make the next week less awful. My new co-workers shared their tricks for surviving the transition, suggesting everything from blackout curtains to melatonin, all of which Ive yet to try. One kept it real and told me that six months into his tenure, he still hadnt fully adjusted.Everything Was a CompromiseAfter two weeks of extremes, I was craving balance. With the exception of lunch, I stopped messing ar ound with full meals and instead focused on eating healthy, protein-filled snacks throughout the day. Since my job requires me to spend lots of time in front of both TV and computer screens, I tried to take hourly stretch breaks to stay loose and focused. With the car situation finally behind me, I could devote more time to exploring and enjoying my new city. I accepted that Im not a nap person and stopped trying. And I made an effort to take advantage of my afternoons, arranging to meet up with friends during happy hour. I set a rule that I couldnt stay up past 9 PM two nights in a row. So I couldnt be as spontaneous, but I could stay out later on nights when I really needed to. I discovered I couldnt have the saatkorn social life I previously did, but with intention, careful planning, and caffeine, I could come pretty close. This transition isnt over, but Im already wiser. As much as I love sleeping in, Im actually a morning person. While my body enjoys getting 10 hours of sleep, it really only needs seven to function. That said, its crucial for me to get those seven hours of sleep consistently. Mostly I have to be conscious of not overdoing it and cognizant that my bodys still reacting to this new schedule differently every week. Im lucky that many people in LA have non-traditional work schedules, which makes it easier for me to make plans with people during the day. And Im lucky to have supportive friends who dont make me feel bad for bailing early on weeknights and understand when I nod off during movies. As much as I loathe to admit it, having a consistent exercise routine has been so helpful. On days when Im struggling, working out and drinking water have helped me push through. My challenge going forward will be to remember this particular lesson as I become more settled and have better offers for entertainment than the elliptical. Having unconventional hours comes with some great perks, too. My commute in the morning is a dream and its great to feel l ike Ive freed up so many hours in my day. I wouldnt have picked this schedule on my own, but now that its mine, Im learning to love it. And on days when Im too tired to love it, at least I know I can live with it.

Video Project Success Defining the Problem

Video Project Success Defining the Problem Video Project Success Defining the Problem Video Project Success Defining the ProblemAlbert Einstein is credited for emphasizing the importance of aufgabe definition by stating If I had only one hour to save the world, I would spend fifty-five minutes defining the problem, and only five minutes finding the solution. When working in the engineering field, we arent necessarily always thinking of problem solving and problem definition in this way. Throughout your career you will be asked to work on different projects that are not fully defined. Those projects will also need to be accomplished within a specific time frame and within budget. This can compromise the decision-making process to explore solutions prematurely before clearly understanding the problem.Jordan Robert, Design Engineer at Noble Plastics focuses on how problems are defined and the significance of problem definition to having a successful outcome. Early History of Policing

Early History of PolicingEarly History of PolicingThe idea of a professional, uniformed police force is so firmly ingrained into our concept of society that its easy to think of the police as one of the most ancient governmental institutions. It may be surprising, then to learn that the idea of police officers as we know them is an extremely young concept, dating back to only the 19th century. As did most governmental institutions, law enforcement agencies in society evolved slowly over time. Ancient Practices In ancient societies, there welches no official law enforcement function and very little, if any, attempts at organization. Instead, individuals, families, and clans took it upon themselves to take revenge against those who may have injured or offended them. The idea of crime prevention welches almost nonexistent in the early history of law enforcement and criminology. Military Might and Social buchen As cultures and societies developed, the law enforcement function bec ame a role of the military. In the saga empire, in particular, the military played an extremely important role in maintaining civil order. To be sure, throughout the history of the Roman empire there were riots and uprisings, but they were quickly put down. The sight of Roman centurions patrolling the markets and common areas of towns was a normal occurrence. Simply by their presence, Roman military personnel went a long way toward ensuring that laws were obeyed. This notion of crime prevention would lead to more modern views of criminology much later in human history. My Brothers Keeper Clan Control and Blood Feuds After the dissolution of the Roman Empire, the responsibility for maintaining order fell once again to local authorities. In England, society reverted to the ancient notion that individuals were responsible for themselves and their own protection. English law provided individual subjects with the authority and responsibility to use force to maintain control. Neighbor s were expected to help each other. This form of social control was referred to as Kin Policing by English historian Charles Reith because it relied on the idea that families and clans were responsible for the actions of their own members. Just as in ancient societies, clans would take revenge for transgressions and blood feuds prevailed, sometimes wiping out entire families. Community Policing and the Frankpledge To establish a more uniform measure of social order, a new method was required to maintain control. As a result, a new concept of policing was developed in which the local citizens were charged with protecting their local communities. This community policing model was called the frankpledge, and required all males over the age of 12 to join a group of nine of their neighbors. This group of 10 was called a tything, and its members swore to capture and detain any member of their group or clan who committed a crime. Each tythingman was sworn to protect his fellow subjects , and service was obligatory and unpaid. Ten tythings were grouped together to form a hundred, and were placed under the supervision of a constable. With the constable came the first notions of a modern police officer, as it marked the first time an individual was given the specific, full-time task of maintaining order. All of the constables in a region or shirewere placed under the control of the Shire Reeve (sheriff), who was appointed by the king, marking the beginnings of the system of law enforcement we are familiar with today. Parish Constable System Lack of oversight by the crown led to a breakdown of the frankpledge system, and it was eventually replaced with a more manageable parish constable system. Unlike the frankpledge, males in a parish, or town, served a one-year term as constable. The constables were responsible for organizing night watchmen to serve as guards at the town gates at night. Constables were given the authority to raise the hue and cry, which was a ca ll to action in the event of a crime or emergency. At the sounding of the hue and cry, all males in the parish were required to drop what they were doing and come to the aid of the constable. The hue and cry would travel from parish to parish within a shire until the criminal was apprehended or assistance was no longer required. The Beginnings of Modern Policing Near the end of the 14th century, justices of the peace were appointed by the king to provide support to the shire reeves and constables. The justices of the peace had the authority to issue warrants and held arraignment hearings for suspected criminals. They also tried cases involving misdemeanors and civil infractions. A system gradually developed wherein the shire reeves served as assistants to the justices of the peace and employed the local constables to supervise the watchmen, take suspected criminals into custody and serve warrants. This system of local law enforcement served the small communities that existed at the time well into the 19th century and was brought to the American colonies, as well. It was not until the population detonation of the late 18th century in the United States and Britain that there became an apparent need to professionalize the police force.
